Lent Week Seven Meditation: Watch

Updated: Oct 21, 2021

{Links are always at the end of your reading.}

Then Adonai Elohim took the man and gave him rest in the Garden of Eden in order to cultivate and watch over it. - Genesis 2:15 (TLV)

Lend yourself to lean into week's seven Lent theme: watch.

Before we are asked to "shamar" (in Hebrew, watch, tend or keep), we experience the watching or tending care of Adonai Elohim—Lord God.

Shamar is used to evoke intimate attentiveness. It is used in this passage of Genesis to give us a picture of someone who tends to a garden. In 1 Samuel 17:20, it paints the portrait of a "keeper" of a flock.

SOULjourner, are you watching over the places of your ongoing healing? When we watch over the places of ongoing healing the very act itself is an act of freedom.

When you tend to the fruit of your healing it is not about the absence of feeling pain, it's about the absence of control the pain once had over you.

It requires the Beloved to help you tend to the abundance of grace where you have suffered loss and endured injury.

I encourage you to sense the shamar of grace.

I encourage you to shamar grace. To watch grace is to seek it out on the outskirts of life.

What are your outskirts? Ponder and name one or two places.

Jesus regularly stunned and confused folks, especially religious folks. When were you recently bewildered by grace? In other words, when were you last stunned, puzzled, or surprised by how grace showed up in a situation?

Pause to recall at least one recent bewildering blessing.

To breathe in calm is to see Jesus reposed in your storm. To breathe out chaos is to internalize the Person of Shalom—embody Jesus with your imagination and the openness of your soul (whole person).

Ground yourself.

Deuteronomy 8:3 & Luke 4:4: "Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD."

Watch what comes from the mouth of the LORD—it's your sustenance.
