"In the depths of darkness, light will always pierce through." —Pastor Angie
SOULjourner, as we face the harsh truths of human trafficking, we acknowledge its devastating effect on Black women + girls worldwide.
Mohawkmomma Studio's commitment extends far beyond Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Together, we are devoted to dismantling the very foundations of this crisis through various means, including harnessing the transformative power of intentional, soul care gifting.
Our solidarity can spark a chain reaction, creating waves of change in our ongoing battle against human trafficking.
The Invisible Epidemic
According to The International Black Women's Public Policy Institute IBWPPI's research, 40% of sex trafficking victims in the United States are Black women + girls. This unsettling statistic is about Black female bodies, and it demands our collective action for interventions + policy changes. IBWPPI reveals a devastating truth: "our most vulnerable are systematically marginalized and exploited."
The issue of invisibility predominantly affects Black women + girls; our missing girls often do not receive mainstream media attention, are excluded from public outreach campaigns, and are usually not accurately reflected in the data. Collectively, we can take steps to address these disparities.
Trafficking: Beyond the Myths
Contrary to popular belief:
Trafficking happens in our communities, not just overseas
Victims come from all walks of life
Victims aren't always forcibly taken, deception is a common strategy
Traffickers can appear ordinary + trustworthy
Online platforms are a major hunting ground
A Pastoral Encouragement + Our Collective Responsibility
Yet, even in this valley of shadows, we cling to the promise in Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Yeshua, the Good Shepherd is present, offering comfort + hope as we become vessels of this holy work by supporting organizations like IBWPPI, we can:
Raise + proclaim freedom through awareness
Challenge systemic vulnerabilities
Provide resources for survivors
Restore hope + healing through survivor support
Advocate for policy changes, which create pathways to a future beyond trauma
Taking Action
