Soul Care Meditation: Ancestral Lessons from Fallow Ground, A Spring Blessing - Mental Health Awareness Month Edition

There is a quiet beauty in fallow ground—a field intentionally left unplanted, allowed to rest + restore. Fallow seasons are not barren; they are seasons of hidden renewal, where the soil is replenished and made ready for future fruitfulness. Our ancestors + the earth itself teach us that rest is not emptiness, but a sacred rhythm woven into the very fabric of creation.
With open hands + contemplative hearts, we practice Sankofa—reaching back to remember the wisdom of letting the land, and ourselves, rest. In ancient agrarian societies, including those of the Hebrew Scriptures, fallow ground was a symbol of trust: a willingness to pause, to honor the earth's limits, and to believe that rest is essential for flourishing.
Scripture invites us into this rhythm:
“But in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the Lord; you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.” (Leviticus 25:4)
This command to let the land rest every seventh year is a reminder that rest is holy, and that both the earth and our souls need time to recover + renew. Fallow ground is not forgotten ground—it is beloved, watched over, and held in anticipation of what is to come.
A Holy Haiku - Fallow Ground
Resting, earth lies still
Beauty in the quiet ground
Renewal begins.
Amen + Asé
This haiku invites us to see the beauty in fallow rest, to trust the gentle work of renewal happening beneath the surface, and to honor the sacredness of rest.
This is the heart of Sankofa: returning to the gift of fallowness, remembering + reclaiming the practices that ground us in gratitude, connection, and hope.
Reflection for Your Journey
SOULjourner,
Where in your life are you being invited to rest, pause, or let something lie fallow?
What would it look like to honor a “sabbath” for your body, mind, or spirit, following the wisdom of the land?
Let these prompts invite you to accept + anticipate fallow seasons + moments as a sacred, ancestral practice—one that brings communion through restoration.
A Blessing
May you find beauty in your fallow seasons,
Trusting that rest is sacred and restoration is sure.
May the quiet ground of your life be a place of gentle renewal,
And may you remember:
You are remembered and worthy even in renewal.
For May's Mental Health Awareness Month, affirm: "Through empathy, I/we return to our belovedness + reclaim in the spirit of Sankofa, to go back and get it, by the enablement of the Holy Spirit”
