Writing (scribbling) is a sacred act of remembering + becoming. Through journaling, poetry, and letters, we create space to honor our stories, process our experiences, and offer truths as a gift to ourselves and those who come after us. In Part 2, we exchanged words for Craft + Creation through storytelling.
However, in Part 3, we explore how our ancestors perceived the power of the written word—not only as a record, but also as a ritual of healing, testimony, and hope.
With open hands + contemplative hearts, we practice Sankofa—reaching back to gather the courage + creativity of those who wrote before us. Whether it was a diary hidden beneath a pillow, a poem scribbled in the margins, or a love letter sent across miles, each written word is an act of reclamation and rhythmic liberation. In the quiet of the page, we find room to breathe, to grieve, to celebrate, and to dream aloud.
A Holy Haiku - Written + Poetic Storytelling
Ink flows, truth revealed
Pages of testimony
Scribble from your soul.
Amen + Asé
This haiku invites us to embrace the robust power of scribbling on the page—allowing our words to cradle silent dreams, reveal hidden emotions, and transform pain into purpose.
This is the heart of Sankofa: returning to the gift of storytelling with words—remembering + reclaiming the practices that ground us in gratitude, connection, and hope.
Reflection for Your Journey
SOULjourner,
How has writing—poetry, journaling, or letters—helped you process or remember?
What stories do you long to write for yourself + future generations?
How can you make space for written storytelling in your soul care routine?
Let these prompts invite you to explore storytelling through your written words, as a sacred, ancestral practice—one that brings communion through shared memory.
A Blessing
May your words flow with honesty and hope,
May your pages cradle dreams and heal old wounds.
May every letter, poem, and journal entry
Be a sacred offering—
A testament to your journey,
And a gift for generations to come.
For May's Mental Health Awareness Month, affirm: "Through empathy, I/we return to our belovedness + reclaim in the spirit of Sankofa, to go back and get it, by the enablement of the Holy Spirit”
