A Soul Care Meditation: Earth Day and The Ancestral Memory of Big Momma, A Spring Blessing - Autism Acceptance Edition

Today, on Earth Day, we contemplate the legacy + memory of my Big Momma, Goldie Warren. I spent many exploratory weekends on their farm in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Big Momma’s Earth Song - Haiku for the Holy Ground
Talk to the plants, child,
Music helps their roots grow deep.
Soil hums her wisdom.
A Memorial for Big Momma
SOULjourner,
Today, we honor the holy ground of the kind Big Momma taught us to recognize in every leaf, every bloom, every soothing conversation with what emerges from the earth.
As a child, I’d watch her nurse a wilting stem back to health, singing hymns to her garden in her favorite place to sit a spell + meditate—the sunroom. “Why you talk to them, Big Momma?” I once asked. She’d smile, then hum her response with dirt under her nails: “They are alive and need love to grow.”
Her farm in North Little Rock wasn’t just soil + seeds—it was a sanctuary where she taught us that regenerative creativity begins with listening. She’d play old gospel music to her herbs and flowers, insisting they’d be happier.
I imagine her attitude + wisdom: “Plants got ears, just like you got roots.”
Big Momma’s hands were calloused from decades of tending—I marveled at how they were her sacred tools.
She kneaded compost like communion bread, turning decay into nourishment. When we’d visit, she’d have us go out into the backyard to climb the mulberry tree: “Go down yonder to pick some mulberries.” Climbing the tree was one of my favorite opportunities to catch an aerial view of the pasture where the cows wandered.
Earth Day Invitation
Plant a Legacy
This Earth Day (and beyond), I invite you to:
Talk to a plant like Big Momma did—share a prayer, a poem, a hum, or a song.
Gift a botanical token—seeds, pressed flowers, or herbal tea to remind someone they’re rooted in love (these are among my beloved gifts to receive + give).
Write your own earth haiku (5-7-5 syllables) to honor the ground beneath you.
Big Momma’s Final Lesson + Blessing
As an ancestral gardener, I carry in my memory + experience of Big Momma that God's wisdom + nurture designed the earth to remember what we forget. We ain’t just standing on dirt—we’re standing on stories. Now go cultivate yours.
🌱 May this be both memorial + movement—a call to tend the gardens we inherit and the ones we plant, figuratively and literally.
🌱 May your voice carry the tenderness of love, the patience of time, and the joy of witnessing life’s unfolding and unfurling.
🌱 May both seedling and soul find nourishment in sacred singing.
🌱 May your heart learn the language of wild growth and wonderous grace.
Amen + Asé

Reflection for Your Journey
As you ponder the hearth + soul of my Big Momma:
What song would you sing to help a seedling grow?
What melody would you offer to applaud the blossom of a flower or the unfurling of a plant?
